New Delhi: Social activist and anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare on Friday kicked off a fresh agitation by sitting on indefinite fast, this time against the Narendra Modi government. Hazare has vowed to continue the agitation till the government comes with a concrete plan on the long pending demands of Lokpal and Lokayukta appointment, remunerative prices for crops and election reforms.
Immediately after starting his hunger strike in Ramlila Maidan he said, “I have written 43 letters to the Modi government in the last four years but did not get any reply. So I have been forced to sit on an indefinite fast,”. Anna has this time named his indefinite hunger strike as ‘Satyagraha’ which would continue till all his demands are met by the Central government.
Recently, he criticised Modi government for failing to appoint Lokpal at the Centre and Lokayuktas in states and not addressing the issues concerning the problems of the farmers. Anna before starting his agitation at Ram Lila Maidan visited Rajghat and paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi in Delhi.
The Times of India quoted Sanjay Patade, a member of Anna’s coordination committee, as saying that “We have three farmer-related demands — they should get 1.5 times the input cost of their produce, those who are above 60 years and whose only source of income is farming should get a monthly pension of Rs 5,000 and ‘Krishi Mulya Ayog’ should get a constitutional status and autonomy,”. Apart from that they also want from the government the implementation of the Lokpal bill assigned by the then President on Jan 1, 2014, removal of two amendments that weaken the bill and appointment of Lokayuktas in all states.
