New Delhi: The Delhi police arrested three suspected aides of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim on Friday morning on charges of planning a conspiracy to kill the chairperson of Shia Waqf Board, Wasim Rizvi, in a bid to spread communal disharmony in the country, Delhi DCP Special Cell told reporters. As per reports, Rizvi had received a death threat call in January, allegedly from a member of the Dawood Ibrahim gang, who threatened to murder him and his family if he failed to withdraw his recent statements on madarsa and apologize to Muslim Ulemas. Following the alleged threat call, Rizvi had lodged a complaint with the police and had submitted his call records for the same, DNA reported. In the past, Rizvi had made certain comments that have not earned the approval of several fringe groups.
Last month, Rizvi had written a letter to Congress President Rahul Gandhi, urging him to support the BJP government in the construction of Ram Temple on the disputed land in Ayodhya, which is at the heart of the legal battle in the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid case. In a statement, Rizvi had at the time said, “Rahul Gandhi should prove the love for his country and love for God and the Congress should support the Indian government to build the temple of Lord Ram at his birthplace (said to be in Ayodhya) and Masjid-e-Aman be constructed in Lucknow.” The Shia Waqf Board chairperson had also lashed out at those opposing the construction of the Ram Temple, stating that such people should “go to Pakistan” or “join the forces of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the ISIS chief,” DNA reported.
Previously, he had also written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, asking them to scrap the Madrassa system of education for Muslim students in Uttar Pradesh, claiming that such institutes “churned out terrorists”. In an email to the Cabinet Secretary and Chief Secretaries of all state governments, he had written: “Some of known Pakistan and Afghan terrorists are products of Deobandi madrassas which are endorsed by Muslim hardliners promoting separatism and radicalization of Muslim community in the country.”
