Gujarat – Votes are being counted on Tuesday for the Gujarat Panchayat Election 2018 that were held on Sunday (February 04). The election results will be announced today for around 1,145 village panchayats.
The voting took place peacefully in Gujarat on Sunday, officials had said. As per officials, nearly 73 percent people turned out to cast their votes in the Gujarat Panchayat Polls across 33 districts till 4 pm on Sunday. The State Election Commission had said a total of over 22.5 lakh voters were eligible to vote.
As many as 218 village Panchayats were declared “Samaras” after the villages chose their sarpanch and ward members through consensus.
Voting in one booth at a village in Chhota Udepur district was held on Monday after the same was suspended on Sunday following complaints by candidates that their election symbols were missing from the EVM.
Elections for sarpanch and ward members are not held on the symbols of political parties but candidates are generally backed by these parties.
This Panchayat Elections came to a couple of months after the Gujarat Assembly Elections. In these elections, reports said, the opposition Congress had an edge over the ruling BJP in rural areas of Gujarat.
